Mechanical Technician – Chemical Manufacturing (Sunderland)
A leading chemical manufacturing site in Sunderland is seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to join its engineering team. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong mechanical expertise, experience in hazardous environments, and a commitment to high safety and operational standards.
The Role
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing a wide range of mechanical equipment across the site. You’ll play a key role in ensuring plant reliability, safety, and efficiency, working both independently and alongside the wider engineering team.
Key Responsibilities

Carry out maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning of mechanical plant equipment

Ensure all work complies with health, safety, environmental, and statutory requirements

Use CMMS systems to manage, record, and complete maintenance tasks

Diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions

Support planned shutdowns, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives

Work within permit-to-work systems, ensuring proper risk assessments and isolations are in place

Assist with project work, including installation, commissioning, and handover of new equipment

Maintain high housekeeping standards and promote a positive safety culture

Report defects, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly

Support and mentor colleagues where required
About You

Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance role within a chemical, process, or heavy industrial environment

Knowledge of hazardous area working practices (CompEx Mechanical preferred)

Experience working under COMAH regulations or similar high-hazard industries

Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation

Experience using CMMS systems for maintenance planning and reporting

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation

Proactive, flexible, and able to respond to breakdowns and operational needs
